I just watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy (season 1). And the theme this time is about responsibilities. Now, for those who are not familiar with this series, the main character Meredith is an intern in a hospital, and her mother, once a famous surgeon in that very same hospital, is now in a nursing home, down with alzeimer's.
In this episode, Meredith has to deal with the lawyers requesting her mother to transfer all her assets to her care because she just isn't in the right state of mind to handle things like finances anymore; the moral issue of whether to speak up and confess that during the heart surgery she assisted, she accidentally 'popped' her gloves and may have caused a rupture in the patients' heart; the dilemma of a strong attraction between her and her mentor (emotional vs professional tug of war)...
And there's also the doctor, who got the bombshell when it was found out that he accidentally left a towel IN a patient during a surgery he performed 5 years ago. He chose to kept quiet then, but the guilt and responsibility as a doctor proved too much to bear and he finally confessed it all.
And he pointed out something, that there're many times when one choose not to say anything, not to point out their own mistakes, simply out of fear. The fear of consequences, the fear of retribution, the fear of losing one's career.
And that, to me, is so typical of human nature. Of adults. Of adulthood. Because truly, the responsibilities we bear now are so much more as compared to our school days.
Responsibilities mean you have to answer for your own actions. You have to answer not only to yourselves, but to people around you. Simple things like, something as mundane as ironing my clothes. Back then, my school uniforms were always nicely ironed by my mum. Whenever it comes to a new week, i do not have to worry about not having my uniform ready to wear. But now, as i am officially an adult (in fact, i'm 4 years past that legal age), i spend 2 hours of my precious Sunday ironing my clothes, clothes that my mum wouldn't have cared to iron for me. No clothes to wear? My own business.
It can also be something complicated like the management of your own finances. As you step into adulthood, you start considering getting insurance for yourself, for that "just in case" moment, and start thinking about your own savings, earnings, spendings, investments. It's a mind-boggling thing if you ask me. Well, the credit card bills alone are causing me pre-mature wrinkles (hey i'm not THAT old).
And what's the point of this entry? I don't know. Do responsibilities come along with writing this blog? well, to a certain extent, yes. The fact that i know there're people out there reading my blog (yes, YOU), means that i do a certain amount of self-censorhip. But of course, if you get to know of my blog through 'proper' channels, that means you're in my trusted circle of friends.
Oh come on, allow me my own little space of bitching. I need to ramble my thoughts somewhere. I don't care if it makes sense to you or not. What matters is that i feel good writing it. And if you don't like what I write, you can simply stop visiting my blog. Just don't make it my responsibility.
Note: If this entry sounds like someone has pissed me off, haha, it's a big NO. I'm just doing a typical shannz ramble. If you don't know what that means, well, you'd know pretty soon. Keep reading on.
